Thanksgiving...

Well Hello!

This week has gone by so fast! I had two exams and a class presentation due this week, and I successfully got all of them done!

Another highlight of the week was getting to sign up for spring classes -- it’s crazy that my first semester of college is coming to a close. Signing up for classes was not stressful for me…

I got all the classes that I really wanted:

• WRIT 102 (part two of freshman writing)
• Accounting
• Macroeconomics
• Intro to Religious Studies
• ACTING FOR NON-MAJORS!!!

Yes, I successfully got into Acting for Non-Majors! It’s a class that fills up really fast… I’m happy with my scheduleJ

What’s up? I am been very active lately. I had lunch with the President of Marymount last week. He invited a group of students to lunch just to get feedback from us about the school. I love that I go to a college where the President cares about the student’s thoughts on how the school can improve. Someone suggested a printer be placed in the Commons for students to use, and he said that it could be done. If you get involved at Marymount, you can be a part of changing the school!

Another highlight was going to see an off-Broadway show, The Coward @ LCT3 on 42^nd Street (a theatre owned by Lincoln Center, all shows are only $20!!!). It was AMAZING! New York City is my campus and I’ve been taking advantage of that.

New York City is starting to decorate for Christmas. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is up, and Christmas music is playing in stores! I am so happy to be able to go home next week for Thanksgiving—it will be a nice break.

 

 

P.S. Last Thursday I went to DAW (Dancers At Work). They wouldn’t let me videotape in the show, but here’s a video of my friends before and after!

Well, registration was not exactly optimal.  I would definitely advise all of you to spend time with your advisors and figure out schedule possibilities for your four years at Marymount. They’re so helpful and will give you the time and attention that most schools can’t give you.

Even having done this, the night before my priority registration, I panicked, planned, and drank a lot of coffee. Then I realized that I was ultimately fine. My four-year plan would work out, but my spring semester would be horrible.  Only 8 or 9 of my required classes are being offered this spring, and most of them fall on Tuesdays/Thursdays, so I had few options when creating a schedule. In the end, I came up with this:

Oh well. At least I’ll have plenty of room open for a job. Last year, I tried to get a hostess job at Alice’s Tea Cup and ever since then, that’s the only place I dream of working. So maybe I can try again for the spring since I’ll have so much time open (including my weekends).

Anyway, since there isn’t anything I can possibly do about the circumstance surrounding the spring, I’m trying to focus my time on Thanksgiving break. I love baking, and I usually take over the desserts for family gatherings. This year I’m spending the holiday with my dad— my parents are divorced and I alternate between the two of them every year.

I’m thinking about the Apple Streusel Cheesecake Bars and maybe the Peanut Butter Cup Blondies for the kids. It doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving without Pecan pie though… Hmm. Well what do you think?

Toffee Cracker Candy

I’ll also have Thanksgiving with my boyfriend (his family celebrates Thanksgiving week, rather than Thanksgiving Day), and he specifically requested my toffee cracker candy (right). I also might have a small dinner with my mom. So there’s always room to try more than one thing.

Other than that, I can’t wait for the city to start looking like Christmas. It’s my favorite time of the year. I’ll have to go to FAO Schwartz, Rockefeller, Bloomingdales, Dylan’s Candy Bar, and LUSH for some winter bath accessories. Does anyone else know of anything cool going on in the city?

Hey there, it's Darius!

I'm super excited to tell you all about my life here at Marymount! I'm a freshman in the BFA acting major and I am loving it!

The small class sizes, the school located right at the heart of Manhattan, the amazing people I've met!Everything is exactly as I expected and more. (Even the sixteen block walk to and from school seems like nothing now!)

I'm originally from Detroit, but I moved here from Palm Springs, CA. MAJOR difference! It's been two months since I've seen a house!

One of my biggest fears coming to New York was riding the subways. I was TERRIFIED, and nothing anyone told me could make me feel better. So of course I figured I'd walk everywhere I needed to go... HA! By the end of the first day I was on the subway gasping for breath! Fortunately, I’ve gotten over that silly fear of riding the subway and it is now my main form of transportation! I actually like it, the people you see, the “subway singers”… it’s great!

Originally, I was never supposed to be here at Marymount Manhattan. My finances were working against me and I pretty much lost hope. In August, I called to withdraw my matriculation, and my academic advisor called me right back and basically said, “You’re not going anywhere.” He worked with me to figure out a soluti

on, and here I am! That's one thing I love about the school: everyone is so friendly and wants to see you succeed. It had a huge influence on my decision to attend.

I am reminded every day when I look out of my dorm-room window of the many opportunities presented by my coming here. I don't think I could have made a better decision.

My birthday is in TWO DAYS!

Hiiiiiiii! Wow its been a pretty groovy week. Lets see, there was advising, which meant no school! I ended up being in meetings all day since I'm a double major and a transfer and a junior, so theres a lot of requirements to make sure I've covered. Looks like a super busy couple of months:

• January--Plato's Republic for a core requirement, and Larger than Life Drawing for studio art
• Spring--Writing NY (also a core requirement), Digital Imaging, American Art, Art of Africa and Oceania, and Color and Design
• July--Archaeology Field School in Tuscania, Italy!!!!

Also 2 internships have been arranged with contemporary artists in the city, and I've still got my trusty jobs babysitting and playing with toys at FAO Schwarz.

We've got our decorations out!!!!

That means that my FAVORITE holiday is right around the corner! I couldn't be more excited. Really. I've been listening to Christmas music since pre-Halloween. Its just how I roll. My favorite song is Christmas Canon...

But before I get ahead of myself a few more holidays are either recently passed or upcoming. Veterans Day was last week, and my dad is now a vet! He retired from the Marine Corps in June after 25 years, and I'm very proud of him. I didn't get to celebrate with him since he's all the way in Virginia, but apparently he got a free Applebee's meal. (: Glad to see the vets are still honored. (Right, him in Iraq)

Also, the little boy I babysit for is turning 4 on Sunday! And I'm turning 20 on the 18th! And Harry Potter comes out on my birthday (yes, it should be a holiday and yes it is what I'm doing for my birthday)! Then its Thanksgiving! My parents are finally coming to visit me and my brother is even coming. It will be his first trip ever to NYC.

BIG NEWS: My roommate and I bought ice skates! Our new weekly tradition is to skate around at Bryant Park every Sunday...it's great exercise and great fun. I only wiped out three times!

Its getting down to the wire, now, so I gotta hop to writing some papers--one each for my art history classes, and one for Bible as Lit. Phew. Wish me luck!

It's November Already?!?

Wow! Has it ever been a busy last few weeks! I went from having no job, to one job, to two jobs! Which is intense, but still totally worth it, 
 

My new job is hostessing at PJ Clarke’s, a great old restaurant that is over 100 years old.  Frank Sinatra used to go there all the time! That is pretty cool, and everyone there is really super awesome.

Other than the two jobs, I also got an internship at a start-up accessories company called CarmaMondé! I get to work on their social media,  which means a lot of time on Twitter and Facebook for me. It’s a little overwhelming, but hey, at least mid terms are over. That was a whole week of studying with my friends, but it totally paid off with great grades(despite the complete lack of sleep).

On another note, thank goodness that Halloween is behind us! Unfortunately, that weekend was not a whole lot of fun for me. I lost my wallet! So I spent the whole weekend going to work and coming right back to the dorm because I didn’t have any money or IDs. It was sad. Oh well, there will be other Halloweens! (And I ended up finding my wallet!)

And now that Halloween is behind us, I can feel the holidays coming in full force. We already have Christmas tree up at PB Teen, which reminds me of all the presents I have to buy before I go home for the break.

Next up is Thanksgiving and I can’t wait! I won’t be spending it with my family in South Carolina, but I will be spending it with my new Marymount family and that is going to be just as fun!

Halloween...

Hello World,

Halloween was interesting! I ended up going to a haunted park in Ulster County, New York, with my brother and his girlfriend. I must admit, I did get scared a few times, mostly because the actors would pop out and touch me. My brother’s girlfriend, on the other hand, was running out of each haunted house towards the end--it was pretty funny.

My most memorable moment, besides gasping for air from laughing at my brother’s girlfriend, was when one of the actors said “I FOUND WALDO.” It took me a minute to figure out what she was talking about, but then I realized she was actually talking about me. All in all, the park wasn’t too scary – but it was pretty fun.

On November 2nd, however, I was really freaked out -- I went to see Paranormal Activity 2—WOW! After that, I started seeing shadows on the way home. Then when I was in my driveway I noticed a street light reflect off of my mirror--at midnight I might add--and I got a little freaked out—again. It’s just a movie though, and an hour later I it was laughing at myself.

When it comes to school, everything’s going well. I got a B on one of my papers in my Sense and Medium course and that stressed me out a little. My story on the new MMC Edge workshops  got published in the Monitor, the school’s newspaper, and I’m having a lot of fun with my radio show. I have actually learned a lot about myself from my radio show, including that I want to learn more about music.

Hello everyone! My goodness, a lot has happened since my very first blog post.

I’ve been was busy studying for midterms, putting the final touches on essays, reading the lovely Alice in Wonderland for my theater productions class, and lastly trying to catch up on some sleep.

Off to the village as Team Edward, a bum, and a geisha :)

Needless to say, Halloween was the most relaxed version of Halloween I’ve ever had and/or celebrated.

The Village was too crazy for my friends’ and my own taste, and after about an hour, we proceeded to return to the 55^th street dorms and just talk politics (theater politics), movies, and life, feasting on some chips and salsa with some lavender tea.

Currently, everyone is getting ready to sign up for classes next semester, which, luckily for me, is an enjoyable time where I can truly embrace my OCDness and put it to good use.I have 5 different mock schedules prepared, neatly compiled with an excessive amount of nauseating highlighter colors. I wish I were lying…

Anyway, picking classes and narrowing down my choices was so tough.

There is just so much I want to do and try and if I could, I would probably take all the English courses Marymount has to offer, however, that seems impossible.

As I glance at all my schedules, what I seem to be most excited about taking is Costume Design I – learning about the history behind clothes and their significance in society.

I think I take fashion and clothes for granted sometimes, but this course will definitely be an eye opener.

This weekend was kind of on the lazy side, but everyone needs one of those now and then.

Ever since my roommate gave me access to her Netflix account….oh geez.

Who is catching up on 21 Jumpstreet, aka Johnny Depp’s first serious gig? I am!!!

Aside from drooling all over the computer screen, I did visit a friend from high school who currently attends Barnard College all the way on the Upper West Side.

We had a delicious and cheap meal at Tom’s Diner, the restaurant where the Seinfeld characters always eat. I highly recommend it J

In other news, I plan on attempting to at least see some small political shows at the Public Theater or partake in Merchant of Venice’s lottery to see Al Pacino be, well, fabulous.

I hope to do that soon, but the month of November just seems to be so busy and I have so much to do!

I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving and eating “heaven,” meaning mashed potatoes and turkey, but also seeing my friends from home and hearing about their college experience, and visiting my high school and seeing their annual production of The Nutcracker.

I think just living in the city gets you really into the holiday season, and right now I’m head-over-heels with the fall weather and the trees. 

Central Park has never looked more beautiful.

Which reminds me, I could actually use a cup of hot chocolate right about now as I curl up to The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead…

Oh my Word...

What’s new with me? Well… I am about to go through my first Advisement/Registration for classes at Marymount. I heard it’s a hectic time… but I feel pretty prepared!

I actually just changed my major to Business Management the other day. I liked Communications, but just didn’t feel like it was for me because I am looking to go into the Hotel Management field, so I decided that Business Management would be a good route! It was so easy to change my major; all I did was filled out a form and was assigned my new advisor!

Halloween weekend I was able to do lots of fun things! Yes… I did dress up!!! Ha-ha…

Friday night I went with some good friends to New Jersey to Six Flags!!! Yes, I said NJ. It was really easy to get over there (I was surprised)-- just got on a bus at Port Authority! Six Flags was amazing--all the rides and the “haunted houses” were great!

Saturday night I dressed up as Luigi (from Mario) and we to the D(2) Ball at the school (a dance event hosted by G-SNAP, one of the student run clubs!). It was lots of fun and I’m glad that my friends talked me into going!

Sunday… was sad. I had an eight-page paper due on Monday, so I spent all of Sunday working on it (you gotta do what you gotta do).

Now that it’s November, all the Christmas decorations will begin to emerge in New York City, and the cold will be sent upon us! Until Next Time…

Parents Weekend!

Herrroo! I have been super busy with school and work, but I love it! I wake up at 6:30am EVERY morning… oddly I love that I’m on a set schedule.

We had a meeting this week about how to register for spring classes!! Spring already?!?! This semester is flying by so fast, I feel like it was just yesterday I was moving into 55th Street and meeting people! But now that I’m a tour guide, I found a way to de-stress… through dancing!

Well… crazy enough, but it’s been lots of fun! This past weekend was Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend! Sadly, my parents did not attend the event but I still had such a good time! I was able to play in the flag football game (my team won! GO GRIFFINS!!!). It was on Roosevelt Island, so it was cool to see where some of the upper classman dorms are. SUCH NICE WEATHER and… my friend Gabby won Marymount Princess!!!! (Congrats, 3 years strong)

The Stuyvesant Oval

Hey, everyone! I'm Ash and I am a sophomore at MMC. I just declared myself an International Relations major with a minor in French and Religious Studies. Whew! Last year, I lived at 55th, but now I live downtown in the East Village in an apartment complex called Stuy(vesant) Town. I absolutely love it there.

 I'm originally from Ocean County, NJ (and for those of you who aren't familiar with Joisey, that’s about 20 minutes away from where they shot "The Jersey Shore "). I grew up in the same town my whole life and went to a massive public school that actually has about 700 more kids than Marymount.
  
 My dream was always to go to college with my best friend, 

Best Friends since the 7th grade.

Amy, but we didn’t end up getting into the same schools. She goes to NYU now, and only lives a couple of blocks away from me this year in Union Square. We both like watching movies, doing homework (or in my case, procrastinating) in our favorite cafes, talking in parks, and taking 'subway-trips' around the city (our favorite areas are the Upper West Side and Chelsea). We've made a pact this year to experience as much of New York as we possibly can (and on a collegiate budget).

My freshman year was kind of a hard transition for me. I didn’t immediately love Marymount as much as my friends loved their schools. But since I’ve gotten more involved, I’ve already made up for the entire first year of school in two months; joining clubs (I’m in the International Studies Club, and was accepted into the Hunter Symphony), getting to know other students and teachers, and of course making the effort to engage in what the city has to offer and take advantage of it.

Oh hi!

Hi welcome to muh blog! In this first post, I'll just tell you a lil bit about myself, even though I'm really not THAT interesting. (:
I moved to NY from a wee little town in Virginia-- Hickville at its finest. We have a toll-bridge to get INTO the town. Therefore, most Gloucester folk stay in Gloucester...forever. Except me! This is the main road through Gloucester. Everyone pretty much lives 15-30 minutes to the main road and then 15-30 minuteson that road to the bridge...it takes awhile to get places.

This is not a joke.

 Its been a transition, but one I've always wanted. I'm finally where I want to be. I'm a junior, an art student living in the greatest city on earth and working at the coolest place ever--FAO Schwarz!

I live with a roommate that I brought from Virginia, who is an actress/bartender, and we live in Astoria, in the wonderful borough of Queens; we're attempting to move to Manhattan though, in the next few months, so stay tuned! This is us at the Yankees/Red Sox game...(: Obviously the Red Sox won!

I absolutely love NYC and cant imagine going anywhere else after I graduate. I'll probably be here forever and ever. Except if/when I decide to study abroad, which I plan to do in January and in July...to Italia!

Hey Guys!

This is Caitlin!

and I’m a transfer Junior at Marymount Manhattan. I transferred in this semester from a big state school in South Carolina, so it’s been a huge change so far.

Let me tell you, the last month or so has been a whirlwind of a lot of fun different stuff here at Marymount. In the past month I have made some amazing friends, seen some amazing things and even enjoyed my classes (crazy, right?). I can’t believe it’s just getting started.

You can tell the school year has started because of all the work that’s been piling up. This week, on top of studying for my exams in Principles and Theories of Communication and Intro to Asian Religions, I saw a one man show called “Through the Night” and went to the Comm Arts departments “Career Night Out”. So it’s been a busy week, but it’s not SO bad. The key is figuring out how to juggle school, a job, and the ever-bustling social life that comes with living in the Big Apple for the first time ever.

I am finding that it’s easier to make time for school work than it used to be because the teachers at Marymount are so inspiring. They obviously love the subjects they’re teaching and the discussions in class actually translate to the work that I have to do outside of class (and trust me that is not always the case, especially if you come from a big state school like I did).

But the hardest part so far as been trying to find a job! No matter how much work experience I had, it wasn’t “New York City” experience—and all I wanted was a little job in retail! Not to fret, I did in fact find one (FINALLY!) at the only PB Teen in the Northeast. Not the best job I’ve ever had, but hey money is money, and money is needed in the city.

I think that’s all I got to say for now so till next time (if I make it through midterms, haha)!
